60th Anniversary of Decimal Currency 2026 Uncirculated Six-Coin Year Set
- Description
- Reviews
The Royal Australian Mint marks six decades of decimal currency with this uncirculated six-coin year set. Released in February 2026, this collection celebrates a defining moment in Australia's monetary history.
On 14 February 1966, Australia transitioned to decimal currency in a cultural shift that required schools, businesses and households to adapt to a new way of counting. The government launched one of the most memorable public education campaigns in Australian history. Enter Dollar Bill, a friendly cartoon character who appeared on television, posters and pamphlets, cheerfully explaining the new system. His catchy jingle, 'Decimal Currency - The Easy Way', was designed to ease fears and help people make the transition smoothly.
The lead-up to decimalisation took years of planning. A Decimal Currency Board was established to guide the process, and a nationwide competition was held to choose a name for the new currency. While quirky suggestions like 'austral' and 'royal' were floated, 'dollar' won out as the most practical choice. When Decimal Day arrived, it was met with a mix of excitement and trepidation — thanks to extensive preparation, shopkeepers and banks were ready.
This anniversary set includes custom reverses on the 10c and 50c coins celebrating both pre-decimal and decimal coinage. The coins are presented in a six-coin capsule, complete with presentation card and outer carton.
